PIVI would like to congratulate its Lao country partners in on the recent publication of another influenza-related paper. “The Lao Experience in Deploying Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 Vaccine: Lessons Made Relevant in Preparing for Present Day Pandemic Threats” was published in the journal PLoS ONE just this past month.
As the title indicates, the paper describes lessons learned from the 2009-2010 influenza pandemic. Although the event it describes predates PIVI, the pandemic – and the Lao Ministry of Health’s response to it – was an important precursor to PIVI. As the authors conclude.
“Notably, the success of the Lao pandemic vaccine initiative as demonstrated by public demand and acceptance, prompted the Ministry of Health to introduce annual seasonal influenza vaccinations supported through public-private partnerships [PIVI], beginning in 2012 with deployment of 375,000 doses, followed by 100,000 and 675,000 doses in 2013 and 2014 respectively.”
